New key, or hit the trunk release inside the car. If your original key was damaged by water the only logical thing to do is replace the key fab, no other way to remotely enter the trunk without the key. To answer your original question there is a button on the fab that looks like a car with a trunk open, you press and hold that and it pops the trunk.

There is no fob for a '96. That button does nothing but illuminate the weakest light on the key you'll ever see. I have a '96.....to my knowledge an automatic trunk release was not offered that year. Therefore the only way you will unlock the trunk is with the key itself.

Sorry didn't know that, but if you have a fab then it will!

I have a 97 and and have to unlock all of the doors with the button on the driver's door and then push in the trunk button on the trunk itself,, i was never able to lock or unlock it by sticking a key in the hole. I don't have the original remote anymore and don't remember being able to hit a button on it to open the trunk either??

I remember the trunk in my Audi being a PITA to open with the key itself. I had a '98 and it didn't have an interior trunk release and I never used the fob because it was aftermarket and it sucked.

Fold down the rear seat and open the trunk with the release. Once open, remove the carpet piece that lines the back of the trunk and remove the locking mechanism. Clean everything out and you should be straight.

Are you the original owner? A previous owner may have had to either rekey the trunk, or the rest of the car because he lost the keys, or replaced the trunk lid. 96s will unlock with the doors. Hold the door unlock button in until all 4 doors unlock, the trunk will unlock as well, just push the button on the latch in and it should open. No remote unlock on a 96, just a tiny little incandescent bulb in the head of the key, that comes on when you push it. Probably no even bright enough to light up the key slot, if you already had the key in it.

I use the central locking to unlock the trunk then i just hit the button on the trunk, no trunk release required or existing.
