My temp gauge on my 98 2.8L works only when it wants too. Is this most likely a problem with the temp sensor or somethig else?

 

Temp sensor - well known issue on these cars. $20-25 and less than an hour to change using a ratchet and a screwdriver. Make sure you order a new retaining clip for it - it's plastic and probably brittle from heat.

 

do you have any picture or any idea where's the temp sensor in an 1999 audi a4 1.8t? mine is not working too...

 

hey... i JUST did mine.. .. if you are talking about the cooling temp sending unit.. they are 7.99 at autozone..

pry this clip off with a flathead.. make sure you dont drop it

theres a two sensor in there a blue one and a green one right beside the coolant tank, which one would be the coolant sensor??
