Default Tire width too extreme 235/45/17 on A4/B5 Avant Quattro?

I have gotten varying opinions on this subject. The car is on a standard ride height and the rims are OEM 17'. Some have said the width is too much, some say I will need spacers at the rear & still others have said I'm ok with this size. What is the skinny on this?

The major issue with width in this case is that it will cause the height of the tire to be larger than the original tire size... So your speedometer and odometer will not read correctly.

As for requiring spacers or not, it depends on the offset of the wheel. What is the wheel offset?
