Unhappy Transmission failure? Help please

Hi everyone,

I own a 2001 A4 Avant 1.8T quattro w/ 98k. Yesterday I was merging onto an highway when I heard a slight "Pop" sound and the revs jumped like the car was in neutral. I pulled over to the side of the road, moved it to park, turned the car off and back on and then put it into Drive and Tiptronic mode. The car would not move, and the engine would rev like it was in neutral, but I did hear a slight whining sound from the rear.

The car had been shifting cleanly, no abnormal thumps, but I did hear what sounded like a bad wheel bearing from the rear (this started 2-3 days prior), a type of whirring sound that started around 30mph, the transmission was shifting perfectly normal in both modes.

Did I have a CV axle failure or is my transmission cooked?

Thanks

Can you get the car to do anything if you try and accelerate with the E-brake partially on?

I couldn't get the car to do anything. I didn't try with the e-brake partially on. I could feel the car go into gear, but it wouldn't move, and there was a slight spinning sound when increasing the throttle in gear, but no movement.

No failure annunciators (PRND) lit up either. But there was a definite "pop", like something broke in the rear.

Could be the rear, yes. CV joints can do this, too.

well same thing happened to me too. my front passenger CV failed. I can rev the car but does not move anywhere. When I rev it, I could hear grinding sound. I bet it's CV axle. u basically have it towed and get it done, it will be as good as new.
