Always use the right tools. Shortcuts usually aren't. Just my bit of experience.
Although I agree with your logic, this was merely lack of knowledge of how something comes apart. There are multiple ways of removing a stereo without using the "keys", like the old saying goes......there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I have removed mine using some pry tool kits from e-bay. I have done a quick video of that. Here is the link.
