Default 1.8T Oil Leak

I have noticed my 1.8T has an oil leak. One confirmed source is where the dipstick tube meets the crankcase. The other area is around the oil filter bracket, meaning either the gasket between the oil filter bracket and crankcase is bad or its the PCV. I tried taking the elbow out it was pretty brittle and plan on replacing a few parts in the pcv system. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? The most oil was coming out where the dipstick meets the crankcase but not isolated to that spot which leads me to believe its the pcv. I just picked up this car a few weeks ago it has 90k miles on it.

here are some pictures

You can tell its generally pretty oily around the oil filter bracket even on top which leads to believe it was the breather hose and not the oil filter bracket gasket and oil dipstick tube separately. I figure its more likely to be 1 problem and not 2.

I noticed oil a few drops around the dipstick tube after I cleaned it and then opened it up and took a look.

What I first noticed was oil gathering to the right of the tube toward the oil filter along the bottom black lip you see.

oil cooler is part of the oil filter assembly. common for major oil leak. Do some searching for a DIY and you will likely take care of most of the leak. What you are seeing at dipstick may be coming from the same mess. Have not heard of dipstick joint leaking.

Good luck.

Unless I'm mistaken, the oil cooler is a separate part from the oil filter assembly. There is an o-ring between the two. You need to take the oil cooler off to take off the oil filter bracket. You need to access the 4th bolt which the oil cooler blocks almost entirely the other 3 are easily accessible. Diagram is for future readers who may encounter this problem.

I will be replacing the gasket (part 10) and for good measure the o-ring (part 13).
