B5 S4 brake upgrade experience
Recently I upgraded my front calipers to B5 S4. Although they are directly bolt on, but the installation processes wasn't that smooth to me. So, I am going to share my experience here in case someone run into issues like me.
First of all, I purchased a pair of used calipers from Shokan.com. It only came with calipers and carriers; nothing else. So, if you do buy a set of B5 S4 front calipers, make sure all the parts are there, they are:
- calipers
- carriers
- hard brake lines
- retention bracket that holds the hard line and the rubber flex line
- dust caps on the floater pins, there should be 2 on each caliper
The soft rubber brake lines on the B6 fits perfectly with those S4 calipers so they are re-usable unless you want to upgrade them. Also, it requires a hex bolt to hold the braket (the one on B6 is too small for it) and you can just get it from any hardware stores. (I got mine from Home Depot but can't remember the size.) If you are missing any of those parts listed above, please read on.
You can get used hard brake lines from Shokan.com for $15 each or you can get them new from dealers for about $34 each. Retention braket is about $30 each from dealers and part number listed below:
Hard brake lines: 4B3 611 721C (left) 4B3 611 722C (right)
Brakets: 4B3 615 133B (left) 4B3 615 134B (right)
Now, those dust caps on the floater pins are the problems. Audi dealers don't sell them alone unless you purchase the complete set of caliper from them and you can't find them anywhere on Audi parts web sites. However, you can purchase them from Mercedes Benz. There is a repair kit for Mercedes cars that comes with 2 caps and a small rubber tube per kit. If you are missing all 4 caps, then you need to order 2 kits. Take those caps and throw the little rubber tube away. Those caps are exactly the same size and shape as Audi original dust caps. I pay $7 per kit at MB dealer. The part number for it is: A000 420 08 76
Last thing, make sure the bleed valves can be loosen before you install calipers onto the car. They are much easier to deal with (if rusted) when off the car than on the car.
Other than that, those calipers are directly bolt on. I hope those info helps.
