Default Key Fob Intermittent Problems

I have an 03 Audi A4 that has intermittent issues with both key fobs working. There is no rhyme or reason as to when the key fob will or will not work. When it does not work none of the buttons on the remote will work. I have troubleshooted it down to when the key fob won't work, if I open the door with the key and then turn the key in the ignition just to the on position and then take the key back out the key fob will work. That tells me that it may not be key fob related. I usually know there is a problem when I get out of the car to lock the door and it doesn't work. I then have to use the key to lock the door. When I come back to unlock the door it will still not work 100% of the time. I have also never had the key fob work to lock the door and then not work to unlock the car. The problem only seems to show itself after I turn the car off and get out to lock the door. The problem is it's completely random when it will not work. At first I thought it was the key fob so I used the other key fob for awhile and it happened with that key fob as well. If anybody has seen this or has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks

Have you tried changing the batteries in the fobs?

Yes, I forgot to mention that both batteries are new. I had to reprogram them per the manual after I replaced them. I replaced the batteries because I thought that would fix the intermittent problem.

I have the same problem. I just lock it with the key and then unlock it with the button and that fixes it for a while. I changed the batteries but haven't asked a shop or dealer because I probably won't like the answer.
