Default Misfire codes - cam position sensor?

Did some searching but nothing sounds positively the same.

I post up here about my A4 but this is actually about my neighbors 2003 Passat with another 1.8T.

It started to run rough yesterday and I went over with my code reader to pull codes. P0300, 301, 302, 303, 304. Two sets of them. I didn't clear them as they will likely go to the dealer.

Started the car and it had a rough idle for sure but still ran. A little tap on the gas and it levels out fine. Let it idle and the rough is back.

Popped the hood to look around and nothing seemed out of place at all. Didn't hear any major hissing from a vacuum leak either.

Went to go shut it down before I took any covers off and noticed the CEL was blinking. Knowing they had the timing belt serviced this summer by the dealer I took a look under the cover and all seemed fine. No noticeable wear and no slack.

Checked codes again and no additional codes from the blinking. Started it up and it was rough again. a couple taps on the gas and suddenly the misfires were gone. shut it off and started a couple more times and couldn't get the misfires to return.

Tbelt service has one year warranty but I don't think there is any connection. Trying to save them a few bucks but don't want to chase my tail at their expense.

Am I looking at cam position sensor possibly? Crank position sensor? Ignition module starting to go bad? Any legit checks I can do to narrow down which one the problem is before they drop at the dealership tomorrow?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long post!

have you checked the suction jet pump. Mine split and would cause the rouge idle to come and go until on day it totally seperated and my car would barely stay on. Also the cam position sensor wires could be frayed. I had this same problem recently and it was both of them combined that was causing my misfires.

They got it to the dealer before I could look at it again. But funny story....

So the standard dealer up-sell happened to the tune of $1300 total. Claimed to be the 80,000 maintenance and some extra stuff. Heavy carbon build up, all the filters, plugs etc etc. I looked at the bill and nothing that we couldn't have done in the garage.

Here's the best part: They go to pick it up Saturday and the maintenance guys are frantic. They had put it through the dealer car wash and one of the trim pieces on the passenger door had fallen off in the car wash. Whole side of the car was scratched and dented slightly. So they apologized up and down for the car wash running in to the car and causing the damage. Sending the car to the body shop now while she drives a 2013 Passat loaner for the week.

Turns out the molding was already loose as the wife had side swiped the garage a little about two months ago and the dealership never looked at the car to see there was already a little damage there!

Karma is a bitch at the stealership!
