Default Quattro system question

Hello all.
I'm looking at B6 A4 and C5 A6 diesel manuals in both FWD and Quattro form.
I'm not really very familiar with the AWD system on these cars, as a result I'd like to know if there is anyway to check the system when I go to view any cars I'm interested in.

How robust is the Audi AWD set-up? I ask this as I'm familiar with the Volvo (very fragile) AWD set-up.

All replies and info gratefully recieved

as far as i'm aware, the quattro system is very durable.

as for any checks: just look at the rear diff to see if its leaking on either side. the gaskets have been known to give way

The gaskets are nothing, couple of hours of work will fix that, the doffs do leak allot, but most of the time it takes years to leak all the fluid out... Just check if it's binding when turning and for some wining noise at higher speeds that is not coming from the bearings... And you should be all set, these wad systems are not like most of the crap... They actually hold up better than most of the car...
