Steering Rack Tensioner Rubber "Plug"
I recently replaced my steering rack on my '04 A4 and I had a concern about the reman. rack I received. The rubber plug on the 18mm hex tensioner nut only had a half outer lip and seemed like it wanted to fall into the housing. Well after I installed the unit and the banjo bolts were tighened, I noticed that the plug did fall into the housing. None of this is a big deal at the moment but the grease inside will heat up and drain out during normal operation now. I want to get a new plug in there before too much time passes. my question to this board is, does anyone know where to find these? I went to my local dealer and they don't sell individually. I found a company that sells the tensioner caps without the hole where the rubber plug goes, can that be used? Any input would be very helpful at this point.
No one has responded to this but I found a solution and wanted to let anyone know if they come across the same issue. Any home improvement store will have expansion nuts, rubber housing with brass insert, as you tighten, expands outer lip/edge which recreates the shape of the factory "arrowhead" rubber plug. Use the #8-32 x 15/32".
