Default Timing Belt Replacement Cost?

Anyone know about the price range to replace the timing belt? I have an 031.8TF with a little over 89K on it. I realize I haven't had the service yet and I'm about to go on a rather long road trip so I'd feel a lot better if this was taken care of ahead of time, especially with the history the A4's have had. Basically, the dealer seems to be quoting me $1,392; broken down:

Water Pump 93.84
Belt Damper 132.85
Thermostat 141.43
Repair Kit 201.39
Ribbed Belt 28.38
Cool.Add 22.95
Labor 720
----------------
$1392.06

I know I don't have to replace the water pump because it was done about 20k miles ago as I had some leaks in the cooling system. Why the belt wasnt done then is beyond me, but I'm assuming it wasnt recommended because it was prior to the class action stuff.

That being said, outside of the rediculous amount the dealer charges for labor, is everything itemized requiered (sp?) if I just want to have the belt replaced? I'm not concerned with the whole "while they are in there they might as well fix ____" argument. I just want the belt replaced and whatever has to be replaced along with that service. Basically, I'd like to be able to go back to the dealer and say yeah go ahead and fix this and this but skip that and that.

Please help! If you need any other info from me, please respond and I'll provide.

whats a repair kit? if the thermostat is the same as mine, and i think it is, it doesnt really have anything to do with the timing belt. its bolted to the drivers side of the engine block.

my audi service advisor told me around 1200 for the tb, so this sounds close. i know a good mechanic that charged me 350 plus parts to do mine. if you live close to east tx ill tell you his name.

In tyler, about 2 hours from you. The guy has done quite a few of these, and had mine done in about 5 hours. If you have any other stuff that needs to be done he can do that too. Ill ask him tomorrow if he'd be interested in working on it. Let me know if you have any other work in mind so i can ask him about that too.

What dealer do you use? I bought my car at Baillargeon (now dfw audi), and started using Boardwalk for service after my advisor went to work there.

Oh yeah, keep in mind if you use him you will have to supply the parts. I got my kit from ecstuning.com

Definitely do it before your long road trip. I'd hate to see the water pump die on you and cause a catastrophe.

I would purchase a timing belt kit from ECS and take it all to a Euro shop to do it. The parts will be $200+ and a Euro shop familiar with Audi/VW should charge you for about 4 hours of labor, maybe $400.

Don't do the dealer, that's the high end of the range for the job. And again, do it before your road trip.

EDIT: When you get a kit from ECS, it will have a water pump with a metal impeller. Tell the shop to make sure the one you just had installed has the metal impeller. If not, replace that, too. If it is, sell the spare on the forums or ebay or something.,

Oh yeah, forgot your pump was just replaced. That will save you some money for sure.

My guy may be able to recommend a place in dallas that will do it for a good price. He worked at a well known BMW performance place in dallas (that i can never remember the name of) for a while, and i think they did some audi stuff too. Think it may have been autoscope.

FYI, what shane.trammell is proposing is a good thing. That's what I did - got together with a couple buddies I met on the forums who've done it before and spent the day banging it out. Just pay attention while he's doing it to learn and you'll get over any nervousness you may have about it (plus save some $). Bring some beer, too ;-)

I just moved to TX from CA about 5 months ago. Since then, I've taken my car to DFW Audi (what a coincidence) for servicing. If your guy is willing to do the job or has a shop he can recommend I'd certainly like to look into it, especially if it's going to save me a bit of cash!

As far as other servicing goes, I don't really have anything else that needs to be done. The 90k service isnt really much more than checking for leaks, fluids, and lube which has been done within the last 5k.

My labor cost was about $10 (12-pack of beer).
