'02 1.8; 114K miles: sounds like two metal pieces rattling together or valve noise ? Only happens at 2K RMP's and immediately goes away upon acceleration, no noise at idle. Oil level good, no oil level warning lights …will check to see if plugs are loose under coil packs as BMW’s use to have this problem…any thoughts?

 

Turns out to be the timing belt tensioner, was replaced 27 K miles ago from an ECS Tuning Kit; part made by Ruville. The tensioner piston does not keep constant pressure on the tensioner roller…really frustrating as the repair job is almost as involved as replacing the entire timing belt…part is only $90, (checking on warranty as it should have lasted 100K + miles); might as well replace the belt while I’m in there…any similar problems?
