Why premium petrol
A really noob question but one that i need clarification on.
Why put premium petrol in a 1.8t? Whats the diffenence? does it damage the engine putting normal unleaded in?
As much info is greatly appreciated.

^^^ 'cept gas and the turbo never directly come in contact with each other (unless you're running a little rich, and only then, it's stil not the pressure side). The turbo has nothing to do with pinging... well directly anyhow.
Basically, lower octane can not handle the timing that the ECU throws at it. Which can cause some problems. That's the simplist answer. To fill a tank with premium may cost a few bucks in the states. If people are trying to skimp that bad, then they should sell the Audi.

I see the typical response such as these all the time, and wonder what Audi engineers would say...
Psychologically, I would tend to use Premium Gas just because the manual "recommends" it. Having said that, I heard from a radio that the modern cars are designed to prevent pinging no matter what octane gas you use. If the manufacture "requires premium gas", then you must use it, but if it "recommends premium", then it is your option and cannot hurt the car. I wonder what Audi engineers say about this.
I drive my A4 like a grandma, so my gut feeling is that Regular Gas would do just fine. My rational behind wanting to use Regular Gas is that "why pay more if it does the job?" What do you all think?

My understanding of Audi recommending premium fuel has to with the compression of the engine. The higher the compression of the engine the higher the grade of gas that is needed. Higher grade gasoline combusts more evenly and with more energy than lower grades, thus creating more power. More power from the same engine = better fuel economy because the engine is not working as hard to move the car.
However as an engine ages, some compression is lost and the benefits of high octane fuel are diminished.

Keep using the cheap stuf, then. You'll pay for it later and wish you would've just used premium for the few extra pennies.
It makes much more of a difference on forced inducation cars, like ours. Believing that the manufacturer is just trying to brainwash you isn't the case on these cars.
The above is not meant for anyone in particular; just anyone who convinces themselves that premium is a waste. It is not. And the effects may not be something you hear, see, or notice, until it's too late.
