Default Brake pads question

For starters, some chicks probably know more about cars then i do

Front are at 5mm and rear at 7mm, when should they be replaced?
I just got the car, its a 2008 2.0t quattro, 30,000 miles.

Don't know about the rears, but if I remember right, there is a warning message that pops up about the front pads when they are needing to be replaced. If it is like the set up in the Jetta I use to have, the warning comes on in plenty of time. I know you really can't compare, but my Jetta went close to 126,000 mile before the origninal fronts had to be replaced. Just be careful to monitor the parking brake cable. Mine started sticking, just enough not to be noticed, and trashed the rear pads and rotors on my Jetta, not cheap to fix.

The warning light for the front will come on at 3mm.

So 3mm front and rear alike is where you want to do it, or atleast start planning on doing it

I had to change my front brakes after 32K, rear after 40K. And there is no warning for rear brakes.

The rear gives you that nice scraping metal on metal sound. Im at 85k and no brake changes so far. My b6 had rear brakes around 70k. Boy that was fun. Finding a tool that turns and squeezes tho get the cylander back in. I griped for a few hours.

As stated you will need a tool that compresses the caliper and turns clockwise at the same time or some injinuity. Otherwise the bolting and unbolting is standard and easy.
