Definitely a scary feeling

Was your camshaft and hpfp in good shape? If so, why not just change the follower so you don't blow your engine even though it is warrantied? I mean considering you have a hole right through your follower I would imagine it's tearing your cam up, but if not, why not just change it?

If it has a whole through it the damage has already been done. Theres a tiny piece missing at the tip of the hpfp.

Reviving this old thread as I am trying to do the job.

I have the dreaded banjo bolt style hard fuel lines. I've searched repeatedly but cannot find the answer, everything that comes up in my searches are threads with great relief they don't have the banjo bolt to deal with.

Does anyone know what it takes to get the banjo bolt off? I have the new cam follower, I have the PCV off, I just don't want to start taking the pump off until I know I can take the banjo bolt off.

What tools do I need and how difficult is it to get it off with basic hand tools in my driveway?

Thanks.

Come from below with either a 8mm triple square rachet bit attached to a flexhead on an extension with rachet. Or use a 10mm box rachet wrench with a 8mm triple square security bit in the eye.

You seriously need to search harder, there are numerous banjo style camfollower diys all over the internet.

So, I did end up getting this done. I didn't quite realize when you said "Come from below" you meant waaaaayyy down below. I wasn't going down that far initially.

I found the following video most helpful

The car he's working on doesn't have the banjo bolt, but he talks about the banjo bolt and actually shows how/where to insert your extension to the get to the banjo bolt. Also, on my car the 17mm fuel line nut was not accessible from the top like he does it, instead I had to get a stubby 17mm wrench and get to it from the firewall side behind the pump.

As can be expected, I dropped the banjo bolt, the schrader valve and the bit. The schrader I dropped because I was wearing gloves and it just slipped. The banjo bolt dropped when I was trying to put it back in as I was trying to thread through the hoses to get it up to the pump. Both fell on top of the bell housing and I was able to retrieve them fairly easily. The bit fell straight down to the bellypan, that was actually harder to get to.

For anyone trying this, when you go to put the banjo bolt back on, tape the bit to the socket tightly with electrical tape. Then tape the banjo bolt very lightly to the bit. Once the bolt threads in a bit, you can pull on your extension and the tape will separate from the bolt. That way the bolt won't fall off as you snake through all the hoses and wires as you approach the pump.

Question Follower issue

Hey all I have a few questions about the follower issues people have been having.
I have the 2.0T and the follower went. Loads of smoke and banging in the engine. Warranty wouldn't cover any of it(3months out) and Audi wouldn't help whatsoever bar suggest I spend $18,000 on a new engine. Anyway I went elsewhere and had the camshaft, timing belt, water pump done.
It runs mostly fine now however, every now and then its like it starves for oil and shutters a bit, then will blow some smoke and clear itself after a few seconds. I have noticed it usually happens when I put my foot down to merge onto highway or going up a hill, i guess when there is more load on the engine. I have no warning lights come on when this happens or after it happens. I have had the computer read a few times after it happens and it is all clear of any codes.
Can anyone suggest anything that I could look into?

Cheers guys
