Default Oil usage

Ok... So about a month ago I was driving my 07 A4 and my low level warning for the oil came on. Only having 42k on the car I went right to the dealer. What I heard was a pretty big surprise. "these cars are known for going threw oil and Audi is aware of this issue and says that it's normal for these cars to use up to a quart of oil every 1000 miles". I was like you have to be kidding me!!! There are cars that are 30 years old that don't use that much oil. He said well lets do a "oil consumption" test. They topped off the oil and I drove the car till the warning came back on. I then took the car in "this Thursday". The car went about 1900 miles and was a quart low. Crazy! So I asked the service guy " So what motor is in the new 2011 A4" he said it was the same motor. I told him "did Audi fix the issue with burning oil?" He said yes.... So I told him then there is no reason you can't fix mine. So they loaned me a 2011 A4 while they fix the "issue".... I don't know what they are gonna come up with but it has to be something. In the mean time I am punching this 2011 with no smoke pouring out the back. I will let you know what happens.

Keep us posted . I couldn't believe it when I heard that 1000 on a qt was OK by Audi. My daughter bought an 07 with 24k on it and it's using about a qt every 1500 miles. I like the car but to me it is a poor design if this is what is expected. My old Ferrari doesn't use that much oil . Let us know what they tell you and if it does fix the problem. I kind of doubt it but it will be an interesting explanation. Good luck

We have seen the crankcase pressure regulating valve cause smoke/oil consumption on these engines. It's the piece screwed to the side of the valve cover with two plastic tubes attached. In other cases they cause erratic idle, MIL (lean dtc's). The valves have been revised a couple times so far and the latest ones seem to be OK (so far). Aside from that, haven't seen any other oil consumption concerns with the 2.0T.

If you happen to see oil that got blown out the oil cap, it's a sure sign the valve is failing/has failed and turbo boost is pressurizing the crankcase. Word of caution: There's two different p/n's and they do NOT interchange (they look identical). Look up the part by VIN. ETKA has been know to be wrong at times so the best way is to have the p/n off the original part.

That is a completely new and redesined 2.0t they are using in the B8 a4's. You have an FSI engine. The new ones are called TFSI. Completely different.

Ok so I just got back from the dealer... This is the story.

My car... And others like mine are suppose to use some oil. Audi has a limit on how much these use. Audi says that the car can use up to a quart of oil every 1200 miles and this be normal. They also say that people that go the 10k between oil changes tend to use more oil due to the break down in oil. So more oil is used towards the 10k mark. So they are saying to change the oil sooner then later. Also, they are saying the new B8's also use oil but not near as much.

Ok... So what are they doing for me? Beacuse my A4 uses just over the amount they state should be used. Thursday I am taking the car in and they are going to do a new oil change. Then they are going to have me drive it 600 miles and then bring it back in. They are going to whigh the oil and determine how much it is using. If it is more then half a quart low then they are going to pull the motor and replace it.

I am getting close to the end of my warrenty and want this resolved. I don't want a A4 with a blown motor at 60k miles. They dealer said that the rings are bad in the car.. and the motor does need to be replaced. But they have to make Audi happy. I asked about compresstion checks on all the cylinders.. and they said that the oil consuption test with prove that it is bad.

So here I go jumping threw the first hoop!!!!

Good for you and great service if they really do put a motor in for you. Ususally they will blow you off and make you stay on your oil check regiment.

a quart every 1200 miles seems too high. mine, at the most, uses a quart every 5000. keep in mind that alot of turbo engines burn off oil. it's not an "issue" that is exclusive to audi 2.0T engines.

it seems that the dealership actually cares and is helping so consider yourself lucky.

My car "passed the oil consumption test" with "normal consumption" of a quart every 1500 to 1900 miles (i keep detailed track). The dealer said there were no fault codes and my car is within spec. I am going to an independent shop to do a compression check and check a few other items as well and then try and get them fixed under warranty back at the Audi dealer. My Audi dealer saw no issue with the oil coming through the oil cap. I think they really want to stretch these problems out long enough until my warranty expires and then I become a cash customer. I love the car but most likely will trade it in for something more reliable.

I am trying to help my daughter find a 2007-08 A4 2.0T and this thread really depresses me. I have a 2003 A6 2.7T with 188k that burns NO oil (change every 8-10k) and a 2003 A4 3.0 that burns no oil between annual oil changes (25k miles in three years). Is the 2.0T engine really that bad??

To answer your question, no. Don't be too depressed. Some have the issue, some don't. On my 2006, I stick with the 5k mile oil change interval and I haven't had to add any oil in between oil changes yet.

I love my 2.0T.
