It's non sense. The car accellerates perfectly fine. He's just a turbo noob.

Look dude - here's what happens:

Slowing down for a stop light, get it down to like 2-3 miles per hour, light turns green, try to take back off but press the accelerator no more than like 1/3 of the way - the car bobbles a bit (like 3-5 seconds) before it "catches" and takes on off. I'm not trying to squeal the tires away from a light. This is not turbo lag - I haven't even crossed 3000 rpm yet when it happens.

Like I said before, Audi has supposedly made a change to the ECM chip. What I just described is not happening with the same terror inducing hesitation that it did in the beginning. I suspect the change was applied at the 5000 mile service.

Default Hesitation

All right - forget everything I've said - it's crap.

About a week ago, I was turning left off a 4-lane thoroughfare. I always watch behind me in such a situation because people tend to flip lanes and then there is some terror stricken driver that can't get on the brakes fast enough. Sure enough, happened this time.

So, I hit the gas to move on down the road. It just sat there. Nothing for what seemed like an eternity. By the sheer grace of the allmighty, I didn't die.

I called the service department at Audi Tulsa. Talked to the service guy for 15 minutes probably.

Bottom line: Yes, this is normal. Yes, that's right: "normal". The car is intended to do this hesitation stuff. He described it as two seconds delay. Next time into the dealership, he said they would make sure that the car was in spec but the point is that this was normal. Have I mentioned he said it was "normal"?

Pardon me but "What the hell!?!!???" This flat out scared me. Had nothing to do with turbo lag or anything other than the computer thinking it was smarter than me.

I really don't know what to do. I'm seriously considering making them take the car back. My wife is already out looking at cars.

My wife and I have both noticed a slight 'bobble' when accelerating away from a stop, but two things are true.
The problem seems much less pronounced than when we first picked up the car ...whether from 'learing' how we drive, or whatever.
Also, we never experienced a 'two to three second' delay, so perhaps there is something wrong with this particular car.
The 2.0 T makes a metric ton of torque from 1500 turns on up. It may be that getting from idle to 1500 is the issue.

I have 6MT and notice this too. I believe it is just a byproduct of having a 2.0 powering a 3600lb car plain and simple. Once the turbo takes control it is a phenomenal car though. I really wish they put a slightly bigger 4cylinder in the car. the 2.5 they use in the VW would have been great. Right now it is just learning to deal with it and getting used to it. The Auto guys have it even worse. Although when I test drove the 3.2l Q5 it had some lag too so it most likely is a design issue too. Both of those combined creates a larger learning curve when driving.

Damn the Europeans and their frugality when it comes to displacement...

It may be that we've adjusted to the A4 because, oddly, our now departed 6cyl Passat had kind of the same issue; a dead spot off idle. Of course that engine was .8 liter larger and naturally aspirated, so it may be some obscure German design philosophy at work in both cases.

ETA-We once had a Ford that didn't just have a dead spot, it would literally die, when you stepped on the gas. It didn't do it every time; about one in seven. Of course, the chances of it happening were directly proportional to the presence of an onrushing 18 wheeler when you pulled out.

I wonder if this is more of a software glitch than hardware related. I have only gotten a bit of a hesitation when I catch the trans between gears. I would ask the service manager to check for any updates that may be available.
I have an 08 C Class and have had the software updated twice in the last 1.5years. I had no problems with the car but apparently, as MB learns more about the new C Class and fine tunes the programming, they update the older cars when they come in for routine service.

Angry I hate my Audi

I have a new 2010 A4 2.0L with the standard CVT transmission. As I told my dealer, “I hate my car”. I am seeing the same issues you guys are seeing. From a stop, or even from a slow roll, when you step on the gas there is significant lag before the transmission figures out what to do. Then once it does, you have turbo lag to deal with which accentuates the issue. I can actually quickly press the gas pedal to the floor and release it and not have the car even move! I have taken it to the dealer and let them test drive it. The guy said he feels / sees what I am talking about but when he hooked it up to their tester, it shows normal with no updates available. He said there was nothing he could do. I then spoke with the service manager and he said he would talk to the regional manager to see if anything could be done.

Like some of you have mentioned, the Sport or “S” mode is pretty dangerous. If you are turning right or left from a signal light, the torque steer once the car gets moving is really bad. I think this is a combination of turbo lag and the transmission.

And on top of all of this, the brakes are super sensitive with almost no feel. The first 1/2 inch of travel does nothing and then the next 1/4 inch will send you through the windshield. The power braking assist so high the pedal has no feel. And worse still, as the car slows, the braking gets harder even though you are not moving your foot on the brake. You have to modulate the pedal back to try to stop smoothly. To add a bit more frustration, there is a 1-2 second delay when you put the car in reverse. I end up looking like an idiot backing out of a parking spot when the car won’t move, then jerks when it starts moving, then skids to a stop, then pauses, then lurches forward as I drive away. I am a nervous wreck when I get out of the car at the end of the day.

I have not given up on the dealer doing something and I will keep you posted if they do. I am investigating an aftermarket Flash update from Stasis to see if that would help. BTW, my buddy has a 2010 A4 Quattro with no problems.

Hey dude, you in Tulsa? Wondering if there's an Audi club here.

The dealer service there absolutely sucks...you probably talk to Stan - that guy is almost as full of **** as the ****** salesguy that sold me mine.

Anyway, Stan is retired and they sold the Audi section of that dealer to the Lexus dealer being built next door.

Esandes mention the computer adapting to your driving style, that is probably the biggest part of it. I keep mine in S mode around town and always fairly heavy on the gas...I don't have that problem.

2 seconds though..., for real...? one-one-thousand two-one-thousand? That's insane....that's why I figure it was Stan telling you everything is normal.

There a specialist shop nearby the Tulsa dealer you might like to try...high ****** dollar, but they are thorough....I've decide to do everything DIY from here on out unless it's just too major for me to handle.

I got horror stories I could go on for a few hours about that dealer, and one of the body shops here...
