Default Shuddering and spewing smoke...now won't start

I was driving my 2009 A4 2.0T home the other day when it suddenly started shuddering and spewing smoke from the exhaust pipes a mile from home. The smoke smelled very strongly of gasoline. I made it home and checked the OBDII codes:

P0303 - Cylinder #3 misfire
P2293 - Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Performance

I hoped this was just a bad spark plug, so I changed them yesterday. Indeed, one of the plugs was somewhat fouled and had a little oil on it. However, when I tried to start the car afterward, it made a single "thunk" and would not crank. My guess is that cylinder #3 is just not firing at all.

I'm thinking I should replace the coil pack for #3. However, I can't find a diagram showing the cylinder numbering for this engine. Which one is #3? Should I replace all four coil packs at the same time?

Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks!

Usually a cylinder misfire means the coil is bad . If I read your post correctly when you tried to restart the car the engine would not turn over. Is that correct. Also do we assume the battery is fully charged. So if the engine won't turn at all then you have a major problem. These engines can run on 3 cylinders but if yours doesn't even turn over it's a big problem. Call the dealer or an independent and get it towed. By the way how many miles are on the car.

Thanks for the reply, jagtoes.

Yes, I was saying that the engine would not turn over, but I think I just didn't reseat one of the connections properly. I just replaced the ignition coil packs and the car does now start. However, it is still in the same condition as when the problem started: shuddering and spewing gasoline-laden smoke. I actually watched it rhythmically shooting out smoke from the exhaust like a machine gun, so I think it's pretty clear that one of the cylinders is not firing at all.

I think I'm going to have to tow it to the shop for professional help...

In case anyone was wondering, here was what finally fixed my problem:

- Replaced fuel pressure sensor
- Replaced injector in cylinder #3

After the spark plugs, coil pack, and these fixes, it feels a little bit better than it was before this all started.

this is going to be a long shot seeing that you havent been active in years, but funnily enough. I am having the exact same error codes as you on my 2013 Audi A4. Exact thing happened. My car kinda felt like it could not shift into the next gear so I was thinking that it was the transmission. Now after reading what you posted, my car smelled terribly of gasoline and a weird electirc smell, but the same two error codes are showing up for me and the car will not turn over. Starter sounds like its working just fine.

Please tell me, after fixing these things you have stated, did the vehicle have any more problems? and where should i get the fuel pressure sensor? Did you have to replace the HPFP?
