What's the verdict? -Oil Consumption
Between when I took delivery and the 5000 mile maintenance I had to add 1.5 quarts. Then between the 5000 and 10,000 maintenance I had to add half a quart. Between the 10,000 and 15,000 maintenance I did not have to add any although the oil lever was showing half full. The car has just over 18,000 miles on it and is still showing full and I have not added any oil. The engine seems to have "broken in" and is not drinking anymore oil. The engine must have needed time to get everything where it needs to be to operate effectively. During my oil drinking days the dealer was nice enough to give me the quarts of oil when I needed it. I hope this helps...

The engine and rings don't get broken in. This is done at the factory and based on the design of these engines and some other turbos they will ALWAYS use oil. If you change oil at 3000 mile intervals you will not see the loss and if you change at 5000 you may see anywhere between 1 to 3 quarts. I wouldn't speculate on a 10,000 oil change. The factory accepts 1000 to 1200 miles per quart as NORMAL. This is in the manual and they even have a CONSUMPTION TEST which legally allows for the design parameters. Technology has improved through the years but ask yourself how many cars of the last 10 years or so use oil in between 5000 oil changes. Although my kid owns the car I usually will maintain it. Her 2007 was getting 1200 miles to a quart and Audi said this was acceptable. We traded it at 58K miles for a 2009 with 20K miles. So far we are 1/2 quart down at 2000 miles. It's just part of the breed so learn to live with it. I remember the rules in the old days when you would check the oil when you filled up with gas (circa 1960). It's easier now by just waiting for the low oil light to come on. Live and learn.
Well we just got our 1st trial reading with my kids 09. We had the car for 2300 miles and usage is at 3/4 quart. So if we get 1qt. per 5000 mile oil change I will be OK with it. As I mentioned in other posts our 07 was getting around 1200 miles per qt. or 4 qts. per oil change. An extra $36 for oil wasn't in my kids budget. We'll keep this for 3-4 years and my ploy will be to get the kid into something like a Lexus IS250AWD. Live and learn.
Just picked up a 2009 2.0T. Appears it will be using oil... I just added about 1/2 qt for about 2000 miles of use. Not sure as i wasn't paying too much attention to how much I added.
I will be from now on.
I had a 2.8L 99 A6 that didn't use any oil between 5000 oil change intervals. Leaked oil, yes. Notorious gasket leaking problems on that beast.
I hesitated to get another Audi, but loved the A4 and went for it. Now... I don't know. To me, 1 Qt every 5000 miles may be acceptable, but I would not call it normal.
FWIW, I have a 2004 1.8T Passat, no oil usage between oil changes on that car!

It has been over two months since the rings were replaced on the wife's A4 Prestige and I am very happy to state that it is a huge success. For the first time in a very long time, I did not need to add any quarts between oil changes at all. Considering I was adding at least a quart about every 1000 miles or less depending upon her driving conditions, I feel like I just received a raise. I was considering trading it after the rework with only 33K on it but now, we are going to keep it.
I was all excited about my 2009 A4 prestige. Loved the look. Almost immediately I noticed that it went through some oil. I had traded in my BMW 328 for the A4 so comparing oil consumption was pretty easy. I put 30-35K miles a year so I expect some oil consumption but at 80,000 I was putting a quart in for every ~860 miles. They did some "fix" that I paid $700 for that didnt work. I had purchased the extended warranty that didnt do jack-sh&*t. When they told me that I had to pay around $5400 to replace the rings I filled the thing up with oil, visited the neighborhood BMW and traded the frickn thing in for a new 328. Having to travel with a case of oil in the trunk is no way to travel.
I had my A4 getting more and more thirsty for oil when eventually more serious problems appeared. When the car had 40000 kms on it, it was using already about 1 liter of oil per 1000 km, resulting in both ignition and fuel injection failure on cylinder #1. Spark plugs and the nozzle were replaced, but after 400 kms ignition failed again on the same cylinder, due to carbon and oil debris. My local Audi service found a service bulletin for the issue, instructing to replace factory installed E type breather valve with J type, which would alter crankcase pressure. This also required a new crankcase seal and engine software update.
I was told that a perfectly healthy engine would use 0.1-0.2 liters of oil / 1000 km. However, they will not start to investigate the problem before the consumption goes above 1 liter / 1000 km! The alarming level is as high as 2 liters / 1000 km, as defined by the factory. Pretty amazing range, anything between 0.1-2.0 would be in the ballpark!
When the car was new, it was using 0.2 liters / 1000 km. That is what the salesman said it would use. I am now starting a log including date, kms and amount of oil added to see how the repair works. I can post the data later if someone would be interested.
The service of Audi Finland was excellent and the repair was done within 24 hours for warranty on both occasions, even though they are low on staff due to vacation season!

Hi guys,
I've had my 2010 A4 for just over a year. They just replaced the seal, valve, oil seperator and did the software update. I'm monitoring the oil level myself so see if it is improved.
Does anyone think that having had this problem will cause issues with the engine in the future? I'm concerned that for two years oil may have been getting into places it should not and an issue will arrise after warranty. Thanks.
