90 200 Turbo - Strange Rattle
1990 Audi 200 Turbo Automatic
Ok... I am not a car guy... I am a Network Admin... I desire to learn about my sweet car though.
I have been getting this strange rattle for over a month and cannot figure out what it is. My Dad and myself have spent way over 5 hours trying to hunt it down.
In words from my Dad: it sounds like it is coming from the bell housing / transmission area.
When the rattle happens:
- It has happened 2 or 3 times while idleing, in park with e-brake on.
- While in motion only heard in first gear.
- Started as only when in first and going around corners.
- It is a clicking sound, not really a plastic sound... more metal like.
Parts Replaced so Far:
- Transmission Mounts
- Hydraulic Pump
- Plastic air cover over the injectors
- Belts will be going in this weekend
- Checked every piece of plastic we could find
- We even sat on the car with the hood open to try to track it down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. If needed I could get a sound clip of it in action.

Thanks for your reply Dave.
Could it be the CV joint if it happens while not in motion? We took it to a local mechanic and his suggestion was checking the exhaust... that is planned for this weekend.

Alright I just went out and got the sound clips. Hopefully they aren't too bad... I stuck my PDA out the window.
Clip 1
Clip 2
Clip 3
When I first started the car today it did it right away while still sitting in park so it isnt related to when the vehicle is moving. Also, the only gear it happens in as it seems is 1st.
Thanks! -Eric

can you record each individual wheel.
simply go to radio shack get a mic core, some wires, and 1/8" pluger.
then record each wheel seperatly, that way you could trace the ratle.
from what I heard its not a CV joint, not even close. CV joint makes a pop sound, not ratle.
I heard something not holding, some peace of a shild is not conecter right.
could be that the insert of the exaust is bad, and fallen off. simply get the car up in the air, and schake the exaust hard, or use small hammer. and see.
