so when trying to get it in to first and some times even second the shifter just won't slide in. doesn't matter what the clutch is up too. but some times if i just shake the shifter around it will sort its self out and slide in no problem. usually only happens at a stop sign or traffic light. just short little stops like that. any ideas?

 

yours is manual, right? :-)

the easiest check would be to remove the gearing stick cover and check if the plastic ball with grooves (guides) is clean and not damaged.
