problems with heater core

Rado. Reading your other posts, you have two problems. First is to deal with the overheat. Probably a bad thermostat but could be a bad water pump. It matters not that the job was done 20K ago. I had a thermostat crack in less mileage than that. If you do the job, you need knowledge first. Go to 12v.org and read up on the system, then read the How-To for timing belt replacement. You cannot replace the thermostat without doing this whole procedure no matter what some people say. You need the cam holding tool, the crank shaft holding pin, a gear puller and, a torque wrench. You can get all that on Ebay or some autoparts houses rent them. About $100 on ebay. Other Audi sites have some tech articles discussing the procedure.

almost forgot. Since you changed the coolant, did you use G-11 or G-12? If not, flush the prestone or whatever out of there and redo the job. Also, the system has to be bled of air or you can get a vapor lock and the car will overheat. The hose that connects to the heater core has a knurled plastic nut that you open to vent the air. This can be a repetitive process and is a bit of an annoyance. Do not drop the plastic nut or that will be $35 for a new hose. There is another vent nut on the coolant pipe behind the left head, but forget about getting that opened up. You will strip out the allen head for sure, and it takes a bit of work to get to anyway.
