Hi All,

I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8L Quattro. When I rev up to the higher range of RPMs I sense a burning smell. Sorry if it's a repost but I've had no luck finding it. Any info would be much much appreciated. Please feel free to contact me for more details... I am just starting to get into the (awesome) car bidness...thnx!

depends on how high you rev it and for how long because the exhaust will get extremely hot ( not a wise thing to do anyway ) and could do damage

 

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I meant between 5k to 6k RPM's. and it would just be a spike (as in not sustainedat 5-6k rpm). Would that cause the smell?

 

it could be oil getting onto the exhaust from the rocker cover gaskets not an uncommon problem

 

is it a DIY kind of job (for a beginner) or better take it to my audi tech?

 

lots of stuff in the SEARCH facilityand not that hard a job to DIY

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the cam seals were leaking. I had to do my 70k tune up and timeing belt so I swapped em out and hevent had the problem since...It is pretty spendy though
