A4 Instrument Display problem

A4 Instrument Display problem
Hi all.
I'm new to the forum as I've just bought a 1998 Audi A4 Avant.
It's a great car but has a couple of faults, understandable after 172,000 miles!
The digital display in the centre of the intrument cluster has dark pixels. At first I thought this would be an illumination problem
but it looks like it could be a faulty display unit.
Has anybody any experience of this?
If it is the display that is faulty can I replace just the display with one from a breakers or does the whole instrument pack have to be replaced?
Thanks, Adrian

RE: A4 Instrument Display problem
Just guessing but it might give you some ideas
I think that is the display area for the Symphony radio channel information, 1. it could be a problem with your headunit, 2. If you have an aftermarket headunit it would be blank (at least my brother's A4 v6 is), 3. I read on another site that an aftermarket radio, and probably the OEM, needs a sender unit to send the information to that display. Of course it could just be a fuse....Hmmm.....

Sorry, I took the photo with the head unit turned off. The upper section does work with the head unit on but has missing pixels like the rest of the display.
The display should read 47.9 mpg but a lot of the pixels are dark and hard to see.
