Default Accelerator Pedal Problem

Oh dear the accelerator pedal (the rubber foot rest) has just fallen off my 1995 A6 2.6. It looks relatively easy to replace but I am having trouble removing the broken piece still left in the main pedal. I suspect I can just know this through but not sure. Any suggestions?

Thanks

are you talking the foot rest on the left side where you rest your left foot or the accelerator peddle itself

The actual pedal itself. Things have moved on a bit. My dealer tells me I cannot replace just the footplate - I have to replace the whole assembly. Apparently it's quite a common problem for A6's this age.
