Audi A5 2.0 TFSI Coolant system issues
Hi all,
Looking to see if anyone can advise on some next steps to solving my issue?
Car: Audi A5 2.0 tfsi black edition quattro B8 on 63 plate engine code CNCD 53K miles on clock.
All started some weeks back when i got a start stop error on dash. Said start stop disabled due to fault and revs would be limited to 4000rpm. Ignition On/off got rid of the fault and i drove home 170 miles no issues. Few days later i kept getting same issue and later go an engine check light. Since the car was due a service I asked Audi to take a look. They reported that there was a coolant actuator needed replacing (they pointed out which one on a video they send) and recommended a full coolant change. Since they wanted £1000 for this work i decided it was something i could do myself. Whilst waiting for the parts i was still driving the car an then noticed another issue, engine temp reading 0 despite having just completed a long drive (100+ miles). Ordered a replacement actuator and flushed coolant system (drained old, flushed with 5lt of deionised water and refilled with new + burped system). I also ordered myself a cheap OBD scanner in order to further investigate the temp gauge issue.
Once scanner arrived I read 3 faults.
P2681 Coolant bypass valve cont circuit / open
P2556 Coolant low level sensor / switch circuit
P0116 Coolant temp sensor circuit range / perf
I cleared these faults expecting to only have the P0116 remain since the gauge was still playing up. It was sometimes reading 70 deg or 0 and changes during a long drive despite the car not stopping. I'd also assumed that the coolant low level might have been triggered when i was flushing and burping the system during coolant change.
To my surprise the only fault which keeps returning is the P2556 coolant level sensor?
Last weekend I changed the coolant temp sensor - the one on the engine block which i believe talks to the dash and i also removed the coolant reservoir tank, disconnected the elec clip and blasted with contact cleaner. It did look pretty corroded and i also gave it a good scrape with a pointy tool. Cleared all faults again, took on a long drive but nothings changed. Still got engine check light for P2556 and still got an indecisive engine temp gauge on dash.
Possible next steps:
Change coolant bottle for new, change other temp sensor at radiator end (forgot to mention than fan is on constantly), swallow my pride and take it back to Audi - despite having done everything they said already. What else could i check or do???? Help!!!!
Had a quote from another garage who said they want £50+vat for a proper VAG scan. Would that be of any use? Whats weird is that despite still having a dodgy temp gauge i'm getting no new error codes for it?

Yes. It turned out to be the thermostat. Ended up getting it sorted at an approved Audi garage, not Audi dealership but still it cost £1300 I think. Thermostat housing had failed which apparently can be a common fault. Once it was off you could see while residue on it. The part itself was around £375 but lot of labour as it’s tucked away and is a huge unit, it just a little mercury filled valve like the old school ones.
Hope
you get it sorted mate
