I'm not very familiar with audis as this is my first one. Can anyone help me figure out where its leaking from. My car overheated yesterday and when i popped the hood coolant was all over the driver side front and was smoking (refer to pics). Coolant also spills on the floor as soon as i fill up the expansion tank, i looked under the car but couldnt really track the spill.

 

the coolant system builds pressure when it heats up. your coolant expansion tank cap is supposed to act as a pressure relief/regulation device. Over time the cap gets "gunked" up and stops working. Also, common on cars of our vintage is a cracked expansion tank. the coolant stays in the tank until the pressure builds and opens the crack, then you get some coolant spray.

at this point, that is my best guess. there is the possibility you have another issue, but it is easier to try the simplest things first.

It is probably a crack in the coolant tank. I had to replace one in my mom's C5 A6 2.7T. If the tank is cracked replace the cap just to be safe. If the tank is not cracked, the best thing to do is to pressurize the system with compressed air in order to find the leak. That is how I fixed the numerous leaks on my 92 S4.

 

I just fixed a leak on mine - turned out to be a weak spring clamp for the overflow return hose (the small one that enters the top front of the tank).
