Default Check engine light flashing...HELP

My friend is on the road in her 2001 Audi TT Roadster. The check engine light just came on and the started flashing and the car sort of stuttered. She pulled over and it died. She has not tried to start it again. What should she do? I googled and it sounds like maybe the catalytic convertor? Can you drive it home or to a repair shop? Must she have it towed? Home is not that far away. HELP!!! Any other advice?

flashing CEL is an indication of a misfire.

depending on what is causing the misfire should indicate if any damage might be done if she tries to drive it. it will probably be OK or it wont start at all. it needs to be scanned to find out what the code is. that should give a starting point as to what is making the engine misfire. If you don't have a shop in mind, take it to an Autozone or Pep-Boys or similar autoparts store. most of them will scan the car for free. their scanner probably wont be able to tell you what the codes mean, but if you post them back we can tell you.

Anyway, you need to ask somebody help her to take the car back home or take to a repair shop first.
