if anyone could help me out.. here's the problem: i have a 98 A4 1.8T manual tranny. when i put it in first gear and accelerate, it makes this grinding noise. i don't know where it's coming from but it only happens on first gear. does any one know what it could be???

 

how many miles? Is it a grinding or more sounds like a diesel car. Im guessing you are missing teeth off the gear. Happened to a friend of mine.

I have same problem, but only when I accelerate fast! If I take my car from 1000RPM to 7000RPM slowly its fine.However if I try to gas it vert fast it grinds. (and only in first)

Problems Below.
1st--------Bad Syncro -->Synchro is cheap. However labor will cost liek 1000 to 1500

2nd------- I read that it could be clutch also like not installed properly. DId you recently get your clutch replaced?

 

when i bought the car it grinded, but the thing is the grinding noise became more and more noticeable. at first it was quiet then gradually got louder and louder. the clutch i think is rather new, but i don't know. i guess i would have to check with the previous owner. the only thing i hate about audi is that mechanics think they can charge you an arm and a leg because it's an "audi".
