groaning noise
So, lately, I've noticed a groaning noise when i drive at low revs and turn (usually when I am parking and pulling out) I have a 1998 audi quattro a4. Once I speed up, the noise disappears. The steering is also a bit stiff as well while this groaning happens. Any ideas? I appreciate the help!

RE: groaning noise
if the groaning occurs when you turn the wheel to one side, but then goes away when the wheel is turned to the other side it is probably a bad wheel bearing...something you prob. can't change yourself.
if the sound comes on with the wheel turned to the left, its a bad bearing on the right side of the car. if you turn right and it groans, it's a bad bearing on the left side. not a big deal, but don't drive on it for too long or the wheel could sieze up and then your in serious trouble (and its extremely dangerous if this happens on the highway at like 80mph!). should cost anywhere from $150 to $300 for the bearing replacement...i'd advise not going to a dealer because any mechanic with a press can do the work much cheaper.
