Default Key Just Kept Turning in Ignition Without Starting the Car

Good Morning All:

Yesterday upon leaving the gas station, I put the key in the ignition, went to turn it and instead of "catching on anything to engage first the electronics, then to start the car, nothing happened. I could turn the key around 360 degrees again and again with very little resistance. And nothing worked either (electronics or starting of the car).

I had called for someone to come and get me and was about to push my car over into a vacant parking spot when I decided to try starting it again...and voila, it started. This happened last night. So, I drove it again this morning just fine.

Was it something I did last night that could've done something? Or is this an early warning sign that something is broken and if I keep driving it, I'll find myself stranded somewhere?

Thanks everyone.

Is it possible I broke something in the ignition? If I did, it hasn't malfunctioned again after probably 20 start-ups. Very odd situation...

My old BMW did the same thing once in a while, I jut had to push it in a bit further in. On the BMW people just put a set screw in to hold it from spinning.

Interesting...

I just don't want to get stranded somewhere at some point where it won't start at all. I really was very close to calling it quits in terms of trying to get it to start the night it happened.

I called a couple dealerships on a quote and it would be a minimum of about $450 to have fixed. For now I guess, it's not getting fixed as it actually only happened the one time and hasn't happened since.
