Default noise from engine

hi all,

i've got a kind of whining noise coming from the engine areaof my A3 1.8T - it only happens when i go over 30 MPH though, anything lower than that speed and there is no noise... it sounds almost like a fan turning.

I've recently changed my MAF - could it be that more air is now going to the air intake so thats the noise? The car is driving fine...

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem when going over 30MPH?

Thanks

hmm just searched the forum - it could also be a wheel bearing i guess. is there any way of testing if its a potential wheel bearing prob or CV joint??

its more a whine i guess - like a humming sound. it does seem to get a bit louder when turning left, but i dont notice it at low speeds.

but i remember thinking the first time i heard it it sounded like roadnoise - tyre related, but because I changed my MAF i thought it may be related.

The more i think about it the more it sounds like a wheel bearing. Is it vital to get a wheel bearing replaced asap or can it wait?

get it replaced asap. TO check jack up the car and see if the wheel has play on the axle. If it gets louder turning left then it will be the right.

took the car to the garage to get the brakes replaced (they were worn), and told them to also check the wheel bearings. turned out the passenger rear wheel bearing was rough - so they replaced it and the brakes, and voila no noise anymore!

thanks for your help.
