Default noise from rear wheel

so i get this clicking noise from the back driver wheel which increases with speed, but only till about 30mph. as soon as i apply the brakes (even slightly) the sound stops until i release the pedal. i didn't see anything obvious when i took the wheel off, but then again i probably wouldn't recognize the problem if it was close enough to bite my nose.

any thoughts on what it might be, or what to look for? oh, 2002 s4 w/90k
thanks

dave

Broken rear brake pads can make this noise, as well as a wheel bearing or failing rear CV joint.
