Ok I tried to change the oil the other day in my 96-a6 quattro and came to find that the oil plug is striped so I ordered one DEALER PART ONLY? so it arived and its not the one i need the one Ineed is big about an inch in diameter and 2-3 inches long can anyone tell me whate type of plug this is .

 

First of all, what stripped? The plug threads or the pan threads? Obviously the easier of the two would be the plug threads, but it's seldom that easy. If it's the pan threads, you'll have to tap it out to a larger thread size and use a larger plug. Your mechanic can do this fairly simply. If you've access to the tap set you can do it yourself, of course it'd be nice to be able to practice on someone elses car first.

 

Doose , the bolt head to the plug is rounded off .

 

Sounds like they sold you the wrong one. Did they ask for your VIN or engine code (3 letters stamped on the valve cover) when they ordered the part? If not, make sure you specify that when you order the new one.

 

No they didnt ask for any letters , just year and model so Iguess i,ll be taking it over to the dealer [:@]to see whats up.

 

Hope your dealer is better than mine. Make sure that when you change it you replace the copper gasket too. One time use, although a lot of places never replace them.

 

COOL thanks Doose I forgot about having to changer the gasket . Also I doubt the daeler over here is any diffrent , what they don't seem to understand is I'm not made of money I got the car used for 7500$ and Im not made of money. I had a problem with some of my lug bolts they wanted almost 5$ apeice for them thats when I found out a lot of V.W. parts are innerchangable with Audi and got them for a buck .
