problem connecting with code reader ('98 A6)
My friend has a generic code reader (with clearing) - I have check engine light on and we tried to connect to the onboard computer.
The attemp failed the reader never found my car - what is the correct procedure (1. ignition off, 2. cable on, ignition on... etc.)
His reader seems to be fine works on his Porsche just fine.

never mind - got the codes cleared (cable on with no power, turn on ignition)
tip for California smog checkers - don't go to the test immediately after clearing your codes the check will fail - you need 60+ miles on the computer after clearing the codes for the check to allow you to pass.
What a pain in the neck.
