Default seatbelt/shoulderharness retract mechanism

My 1995 S6 driver's side belt retract system has become too relaxed in reeling in the belt when it is unfastened. I've never adjusted one of these mechanisms, and would like to know how best to do it, including how to remove the plastic trim cover without damaging it. I expect that the system hasn't changed much through the years since the first Audi 5000, and any tips will be much appreciated, thanks. Larry

usually the plastic surrounds just pull off, and its like 2 bolts to remove the retractor assembly. generally you'd have to replace it, ive never adjusted one, nor would i think that its even possible. sorry.

I will try to pull off the trim and have a look. Thanks to both of you for the posts, the drawings especially are quite helpful. Larry
