stuck in park - brake light switch?
My 99 A6 2.8 tiptronic is getting stuck in the park position. A mechanic told me that it is probably the brake light switch malfunctioning. Has anyone seen this in their cars before? Also, if the brake light thing is the culprit, is this a do-it-yourself type of job? (keeping in mind I'm not as mechanically inclined as other forum members seem to be). I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts on this!

I'm not sure as the problem was reported by my wife. When she got in it worked fine. She did say that the little symbol on the shifter of the foot on the brake pedal did not light up as it usually does when applying the brake in order to move the shift lever. If I see the problem occur, I will see what the brake lights look like.

if the break lights are on all the time it could be the switch is bad or came out of the holder as they do some times when incorrectly fitted so worth checking that first it could save you a few $$$

silly me im thinking of a totally different fault sorry about that, if the break lights are not working then check the fuses first next would be the switch ( its an auto ) so it the break lights were on all the time you wouldn't need to press the peddle at all to change from P because of constant power from the switch so it would think the peddle was pressed my appols

Also keep in mind the trans on these cars are computer driven and the brake light indicator plays a role in what the software tells the trans to do. If the switch is bad it could play a role in locking the gears. My indicator was making the trans shift hard because it was throwing braking codes when i was not braking. Good Luck!
