Timing Belt Replacement

JohnZ, I am in a similar situation. 2006 A3 with just under 60,000 miles. I am the original owner. While the book says to replace the timing belt & associated bits at 75,000 miles (may have been extended a bit after the manuals came out) I figure the 10 years kinda out ways the mileage figure. And as many people I know reach 100,000 miles in 4 years or less, 10 years is stretching the luck in my mind. Taking mine in next week for timing belt, water pump and anything associated with that job. Waiting for it to break will be much more costly if it is even repairable after a belt breaking at speed on the road.

Find a reputable NON-Dealer shop that specializes in Porsche/Audi/Mercedes/VW cars. You'll pay at least a third less. I was going to tackle the first timing belt change (since I owned the car) on my 03 A8 and decided I could not do it in a timely manner. There is a shop about an hour away that did it for me (plus water pump) for around $1200. I delivered the car on Wednesday evening and picked it up Friday evening. I'll be doing the next change since I now have all the tools (cam lock bar and crank lock). I also need to replace the variable timing adjuster gaskets so I'm going to do all of it at one time this summer.
