Default Transmission woes.

Hello.
This is my first time here, but here's my story. I have an 06 Audi A4 Cabriolet which was making noise from the front end. Had Brakes replaced, still had noise. Took it to mechanic and he said had bad front wheel bearings and axel. Replaced all, only for him to call me today and say when he went to test drive car would not move. After looking further into problem he informed me that its my transmission, that there was no oil in differential and it caused damage to my tranny. What i dont understand is that I drove the car there with no check engine light or skipping, no indication of tranny issues. Any advise? Can use all the help I can get. Thanks
