Default Transmission woes....

I am a newbie here, from CT.so here is my story. I have an 06 A4 Cabriolet. Was hearing noise from front end. Did the brakes, still had noise. The Mechanic told me I needed Wheel Bearings and Front Axel. Fine. He replace them. Then he called to say when he went to test drive the car it would not move and now says its the transmission. He said there was no oil in the differential and it damaged the tranny. What I dont understand is that I drove the car there, had no check engine light, felt no skipping and now its the tranny?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

No light going to come on if you destroyed your diff.

ok. Dont mean to seem stupid. so if the diff is destroyed then it destroys the transmission. And how was I able to drive it before... And why did they not diagnose that before they did the other work on the car. Dont know if I trust them now. Whats the best way to go for the tranny? Can it be rebuilt?

Well if the diff imploded one would assume it could take out the tranny but not nessecarily. Maybe only the diff is broken. That is 2 different problems. 2 different parts. I would call around and get some quotes on both options from other places. Try giving the dealer a call.

Is it the front or center Torsen diff. The front diff is obviously between the front wheels, but the Torsen center diff is also located at the rear of the engine compartment. In the automatic, the transmission and the Torsen center diff are one unified unit, not so in the manual. Could it have been the Torsen he was talking about. If that came apart, then maybe it found it's way to the transmission.

Not sure which diff it is. He just said that it had no oil in it and that it damaged the tranny. Still dont understand how I was able to drive it there and when he put the new axels in it would not drive. Plus no check engine light and the red cluster light on the dash was not lit when I drove it either. No reving on the rpms, no slipping either. Dont get it
