Default when clutch problem, replace flywheel?

Hi,

As per my post a few minutes ago, I have some type of a clutch problem. The clutch has a problem engaging. Also, it is hard to get the shifter into gear.

The mechanic shop I went to suggested that they will be replacing the clutch, pressure plate and fly wheel. This will cost $1200 for parts and $800 for labour.

3questions:

1) does the flywheel have to be replaced when the clutch is gone?
2) could the flywheel be the culprit in this problem?
3) is this too expensive? (10 hours labour)?

Thanks,

NB

Thanks for the input Dave. So, do I ask the mechanic whether he checked the slave, or do I go somewhere else for a second opinion?

I'm not sure about the ettiquete here.
