Convince me to buy an 04 S4!!
I currently have a modified (nothing crazy though) 04 WRX
I have worked very hard for a long time and will be putting myself in the position to buy a new car this summer. In fact, a friend of mine has committed to buy my car sometime this summer, possibly early July.
I love Subaru, and everything about them so this is a very tough decision and I would really appreciate thoughtful and helpful insight in the matter.
As of now I'm looking at the e46 M3 and Audi S4 which I must say are two of the most gorgeous cars on the road, IMO - And my other top choice is a STi.
Now I know these cars are no where near the same type of car, but I love them all.
Now I know at my age (18) insurance is going to be a killer for either car - so lets just leave it out of the equation and just talk about the cars.
Now if I get the S4 am I going to go broke paying for maintenance? I don't know first hand about the reliability of these cars, but I have heard some horror stories of money I'd rather keep. The STi is more practical, but the M3 would be a much nicer DD and not in the middle of the "tuner" scene which gets old fast. The S4 is still awd so its more practical, not as light and nimble as the m3 but still a great car. So im seeking advice. Anyways I appreciate any input if you read all of this and please no flaming of me and/or subaru - they make great cars, and we all have our preferences/opinions
I'm only looking at the 04 4.2L V8 S4 just for your info, not into the older one as much
my car as of now:

While not as inexpensive and perhaps as reliable as a WRX, and after owning both, the S4 is a completely different car in every way. Are you buying on looks alone? You can drive it all year long, autocross it, andstill turn heads when she's all cleaned up. As of late, I've noticed that resale values have tanked compared to last year, so now is the time to buy. It will not disappoint.

Do you miss the kick of the turbo? At what speeds does a S4 overtake a STi in a straight line?
And what about S4 vs M3..
And my biggest question - what power is there to be had with mods that are sanely priced for the S4?!
I test drove an 05 S4 the other day and I thought it felt sporty, fast, and very attached to the road. Quattro gives you a better sense of convidence on the road in any condition (i'm sure you know how badass awd is already, thanks to the subi). If you live somewhere where it snows alot it's definatley a must.
As for missing the turbo, I thought it was great the power comes on very smoothly.
I think on Top Gear the S4 was faster around the track, but the bimmer was faster in a straight line andmore 'dramatic'
I would just say go test drive both of them, and go with the one that you like the most, either one that you get is gonna be sweet
