Default First Audi Noob

Hello Audi Forum members! My name is Paul and my wife and I just bought a 2003 Allroad Quattro. We are having a baby in December and I have been looking for a solid, safe, spacious, and fun to drive wagon for my wife. We stumbled on the Allroad that was owned by a friend and snatched it up.

I’m no stranger to turbo cars; I have had two KA-T 240's, a KA-T Datsun 510 and currently am driving a 2003 WRX Wagon. I am however a stranger to German cars and will scour these boards learning as much as I can.

We plan on having the car for a while and really love all the creature comforts. The car just had the air suspension replaced, new brakes (F/R), new tires, and the timing belt, water pump and miscellaneous seals replaced before we bought it. I do know that I need to replace the passenger side half shaft and will investigate as to what tools are needed as I understand Audi likes to use torx and or star pattern bolts.

Anyway, sorry for the novel but I'm excited to be a part of this community.

Welcome to AF. Allroad is a sweet ride. With respect to your halfshaft problem, yes you will need to buy 12-point (aka triple square) bits. If you try to use a Torx bit you'll probably tear up the heads. Audi uses them to secure the axle to the diff. However, if you're looking to replace it due to a bad CV joint, OEM halfshafts cost a fortune and some friends and I discovered that some of the aftermarket replacements were mismanufactured (too short). You may want to look into a CV joint rebuild kit instead. It's easy to do and takes 15-20 minutes once the axle is off the car. Check out www.fcpgroton.com to see if they have one for you - they sell one for my A4 for $61.
