Ask a Police Officer Thread Ver. 2
I searched for the quote with little luck. It is a common phrase in both law enforcement and firefighting, the chances that hollywood has used it are pretty good.
Great threads, there's a lot of good information here.
Just had a quick question - I've heard from a lot of different people that when someone goes through an intersection and the traffic light camera takes a picture and you receive a ticket in the mail, that you can fight it in court by exercising your right to "face your accuser."
I haven't done it myself nor have I received any of those traffic light tickets, but from what I hear the case gets dismissed if you do that. Does that actually work?

Well you are right and wrong at the same time, I'll explain.
You do have a right to face your "accuser" and request a court date for these tickets. In this case the accuser will just be a representative of the state. So it is NOT automatically thrown out when you go to court. In fact, these tickets are some of the most difficult ones to get out of. The only way to get out of the ticket is to bring irrefutable proof that you were not the person driving the vehicle. These tickets go to the registered owner of whichever tag is photographed. Aside from bringing a person who admits to driving your car and paying the ticket themselves there is little you can do. Are there other ways to get out of them, I am sure there are but I would imagine these are rare cases.

Just a heads up for local residents of Montgomery County MD and those who pass through it. A new speed camera is operational on Bel Pre Rd around the Homecrest Dr area. Speed limit is 35mph if you go 10mph over, 40 dollar ticket. Locations of these cameras are available on the net, the van locations change daily.

I really wish I could remember where it was.. I just know it was right before you enter a tunnel.

Notahondaowner... I got a pace ticket on the GSP about week ago. Got a court date set in Eagleswood on the 11th. Wtf... a pace?? If she (the officer) doesn't show, can I just say I wasnt speeding, she flew up behind me and just put her lights on and pulled me over? She didn't hit me with radar and gave me a 79 in 65 pace ticket...
Main question is, how can I get it down to no points. Got a similar speeding ticket a year or two ago and plead something along the lines of "unsafe driving" which dropped it to no points and a fine. Trying to keep the record semi-clean. Any suggestions regarding this being more familiar with the laws of the land??

It was a little while ago (almost 3 years now) but I will try and remember.. I was driving to Advance Auto in NJ since I live in Greenwich, CT and I figure ok should not take long, well as I was nearing Gun Hill road I see a NYS Cop and some unmarked car getting ready to merge back into the 3rd lane I was driving in so I slowed down (was not speeding at all) and I moved to the center lane.. So I passed the unmarked car and the NYS cop got in front of me.. then out of the corner of my eye i saw the unmarked car move along side me and was pacing my speed.. So I'm thinking ???? then in a split second the NYS cop gets in the very first lane slows up then gets behind me and turns his lights on.. I pulled over and he says I was following too close... first time I've ever been stopped since I got my DL when I turned 18... I think to myself Follow to close? So When he came to the window he asked me do you know why I pulled you over? and I gave a very honist anwser and I said I have no clue, and he said it was because I was following his car too close.. But as he stopped me I watch other cars going past following others less then 2 seconds in front of them but yet I gave him 4 seconds...
Not to sound like a rant or anything but I bet if I slowed down while I was being paced I would of still been stopped.. Nevertheless the ticket was $100 or $150 I forgot.. I did not feel like driving to the court in the Bronx at some 8AM in the morning so I just paid the ticket... Ins. did not go up or anything... But I still to this ask wonder if he was trying to meet a Qouta not only was it near the end of the month but it was a Friday at that.

A pace is set for a speeding ticket. The following laws in this state are judged by car lengths. For every 10 mph you should be 1 car length behind that vehicle. So if you were going about 70 you should be 7 car lengths behind that vehicle. Some departments do have quotas, some don't. Whether or not theirs does I could not say.

I still think it was stupid as other cars (I spotted at least 20) were on each others bumpers doing 60 and about 1-2 seconds behind each other but yet I was not enough to let the cop merge on the highway from the meridan...
I heard that if you needed to pay a speeding ticket and wanted to try to avoid getting it reported to your insurance and the points issued to your license for the ticket, if you send a check in the mail that is about $5 over the actual amount for the ticket, then the police station will send a return of the extra $5 and you do not do anything with that $5 return, then the police station can not send the information to your insurance comany and it does not add points to your license because it is an imcoplete transaction. . . or something like that. If you have ever heard of anything like this any comments or thoughts would be great.
Also if I was pulled over and an officer asked to search the car and I allowed them to with no problem, but the glove box was locked coud the officer force me to unlock and open the glove box or could I refuse him the right to look in it because it was locked from before?
