Ask a Police Officer Thread Ver. 2
NotAHondaOwner,
1 Quick ?....About a year ago I recieved a ticket for speeding on the freeway. The officer that gave me the ticket was doing the get on and off of the freeway trick, which I did notice. After about 3 or 4 got on/offs I got pulled over. He wrote me up for "about 85 in a 65" He also stated that he had to drive 130 MPH to catch me...LOL In your opinion traveling at 130 MPH is it possible to guestimate someone elses speed. I did pay the ticket because I was speeding and actually was written up for 85 when I was going over 100. Just would like to know if it was indeed possible or not. Thanks for your time !!!

Bear with me on this one,
To set a pace you are supposed to travel the same speed as the other vehicle at a distance where you can keep eye contact with that vehicle. You should be using the same point of reference to count off the distance in seconds, IE vehicle passes roadsign you count off how long till you pass it, vehicle passes another sign you count off how many seconds till you pass it. If the time is the same on both counts you are travelling the same speed. Unless this man was a math genious and highly perceptive I doubt this was possible. This is why you were written for less than you were travelling. The proper charge in his case in this state would have been travelling at a speed greater than reasonable, it's a general speeding ticket since he can't determine your exact speed. There is such a thing as moving radar in some cruisers, but clearly if you were doing 100 and didnt get written for it, he used the ole guestimation technique.
The on/off trick is where the officer will get on the off ramp and get back on as soon as they exit. The idea is that any speeders behind him will get to warp speed as soon as they hit the offramp. Once they get back on the freeway, the speeder is at warp speed with the officer not too far behind.
As far as the on and off trick I am not familiar. I assume in CA this might be transferring from local to express sides of the highway?

I live in Oregon and my dad is one of three regional accident reconstructionists for our state police. In Oregon, he can either be on or OFF duty, see a traffic violation occur, and he has 6 months from the date of the violation to issue a citation. is that the same in your state.
in other words, what statute of limitations for traffic violations?
Also in oregon, state police at least, all the officer has to do is identifty themself as a police officer, so, he could pull someone over in his personal vehicle, show his badge and i.d. himself, and issue a citation, is this the same for you notahondaowner, i didnt read many replies from this thread so idk if you've already answered?
Every department has different requirements. My department requires 60 college credits or 2 years of military experience to apply. I have a degree in criminal justice myself. Also if you wish to advance to different ranks you need various degrees. IE sergeant requires bacholer's degree, captain and above requries a master's.
Not necessarily, we often ask when we already know that we can because it helps our case when you give persmission.
