2000 s4 cranking but not starting
My boyfriend just got a 2000 s4 this weekend. It has 120k miles but had the water pump, timing belt and clutch replaced recently. He took it to a mechanic before he purchased it and it passed the compression check, but there were 3 codes on the check engine; something with the evap, the gas cap was loose and a petal sensor problem.
Today while we were slowing down at a light, he was shifting from 2nd to 1st and it almost felt like a tire blew but the engine was puttering(? I'm not sure how to describe it except for it was instantly obvious something was wrong). We were able to turn off the road immediately (coasting) and park it in a lot. He turned the car off and checked around then tried turning it back on. When he turned the ignition the car would crank but not start. Tried pumping the petal to get more gas into the engine but still no luck. Obviously at this point in time, he's filling the far full of foul language since we didn't even have ownership for 3 days.
I'm hoping to get some kind of pre-diagnostic before we have to take it to a mechanic. I'm not very car literate so please ask any questions if I missed describing something. I'm just hoping this car isn't completely dead and won't cost like 6k to repair. Please help!!! Thanks guys

I think it's stock
As far as we know, the car is stock except for the tires. I also forgot to mention there's been a somewhat sketchy engine swap. Sketchy as in a bolt on the engine block was missing and two of the hoses were attached with zip ties
