I just picked up a new audi gauge cluster for my car. when i got it home i realized that the s4 symbol is on the right side under the speedo and it has the four rings by it. The one my car comes with has the s4 symbol on the left under the tach but its just the s4 symbol alone. what is the difference between the two? Different model years?

its another one of those Early modes / late model things. You got the early model cluster (pre 01)

 

does anyone know if the newer model cluster will plug and play in the older generation car?

depends what you mean...need to be more specific. if you mean a 2001-2002 into a pre 2001, yes it will fit. if you mean b6 into b5, no...they are not only different in size, but the connections will also be different.
