Default first gear: traction problems or power loss?

Got a question for all you heavy-footed S4 drivers. I'm a relative S4 newbie, bought my 2000 6-speed last summer. As far as I know, it's stock and in great shape. My passenger side turbo whines a little after cold start-ups, but I'm not overly concerned yet, I properly warm up and cool down, and there's no codes.

On occasion, I do a run up to fourth gear at full throttle, just to make sure everything's pulling smoothly. I've noticed in 1st gear that I seem to lose traction or power around 5,000RPM. My buddies can't tell if I'm spinning the tires (stock size Falkens). I can't hear tires squealing or notice an unusal increasein engine speed. Am I having a problem with top end power or what? 2nd seems fine, pulls strong, 3rd pulls very strong. Any ideas?

I highly doubt your losing traction unless your tires are bald. Have you noticed this since you bought it or did it just start doing it? I think it may just be the boost trailing off and I believe they run lower boost in first gear than other gears too.

Um, unless you've recently upgrade to GT28 turbos with a 150 shot of NO2 and you're putting 600HP down to the wheels (or it's raining out), I highly doubt you're spinning your tires. That's pretty tough to do in an AWD car while rolling. Remember, the torque in these cars comes on early and tapers off, so by 5,000RPM your turbos are starting to run out of breath.

It soundskinda like your clutch, but that would be happening worse in the upper gears. Maybe its your N75 valve or related circuitry.Hook up a boost gauge and see what'shappening.

2k S4probably has a better idea what to do...

Since it's stock, I doubting boost cut. Boost is limited in 1st gear. Stock they run out of breath up top.

Now, does the RPM's go up, & your forward momentum doesn't? If so that's a slipping clutch.

I'm guessing you don't have a boost gauge, or a Vag-com? With out them, we will not be much more help. There is also a good chance that your DV's are leaking under high boost. if there stock, I would just say they are leaking, & replace them with 710N DV's.

yeaaa the maddd professor does it again... haha but yea in first gear stock i think the boost hits a max of liek 2-3 psi soo its not that and also when ur "lead footing" first gear.... the reaction time form 5k-redline is less than a blink of an eye so maybe your just getting to redline and its time to shift.... If u ask me there isnt a problem at all just a little quark that you seem to notice.. and as for spinning your wheels inj 1st with a stock car.... dont listen to them it can be done easliy with 3 othe rpeople in the car and also on a bad clutch.. its all about timing haha.

and on the side.... haah 2ks4 with all yuor knowledge your car must run liek candy canes (ignore the analogy haha)

Yea, you can spin the wheels in any stock car with a clutch. But should you? I'm thinking the S4 will not like it to much, & it's going to be super hard on the drvietrain.

Of course my car runs well, but I notice every little thing, it's kind of a curse.[&:] There is almost always something wrong with the car.
