I am taking my car to a friend with a lift, all the tools you could need and an engine puller. My car is at 66,200 its time for the timing belt and water pump, turbos are getting rebuilt (one is whining and is almost blown), new beefy stainless oil return lines, t-stat and gasket, and the oil pans are being re-gasketed.

I don't have the time to do this myself while I'm in school and working, so hes charging me 50 bux an hour to do all this. Any idea what the flat rate is on all this? Thanks

Oh and its a 2000 S4 bi turbo 6 speed and he has worked on a few of these cars so he knows what hes doing.

 

dealer quotes 17-18 hours. in reality, it can be done in 6 without too much stress if you know what your doing. that is not including work done while in there. just installation and removal.

an engine pull in 6 hours?? damn man, you must have mad wrenching skills. i would imagine a timing belt in 6 hours, but the whole engine pull and reinstall of components, you would be looking up in the 15+ hour range. why rush something that is so relient on absolute detail, and accuracy. if it were me, i wouldn't want someone to rush something like that. be prepared to fork over some money in the labor on that kind of work. But thats just me... i can wrench pretty well, but i am no mechanic. although i have never pulled the engine on my s4, i have in other cars, and they were not nearly as complex, and it took some time and patients. good luck!!

 

I think he meant just removal in 6 hours not putting it back in. I havent done it yet but i hear alot of people say that its really pretty straight forward, and once youve done it a couple times its a piece of cake. I know theres people out there who can do it really fast, though it also helps having done it before and if you can have one person working below and one working above. Teamwork

 

the first time i did it, it took about 20 hours total work time (in and out) with 2 of us. the second time only took 3 of us about 10 hours total (in and out), takes longer to pull than replace, probably because all the electrical connections go together much easier than they come apart.

so yea, i meant 6 hours to get it out, sorry for confusion. and the Timing belt job itself takes not more than an hour and half or so...the time consuming part is front clip removal, but once you have done it once, its nothing the second time.

 

Cool. I guessed about 12-15 hrs for everything with his skill level. I'm going to give him a hand whenever I can.

 

but at 50 an hour and an experienced hand.. you cant beat it.. i live in rural kentucky and our labor rate at an aftermarket shop is 80.00 an hour.. so 50 is good.. and agreed.. once you get the clip off its like there's a naked person staring at you .. with an awkward silence abounding.. you can get to and see so much more of the engine its ridiculas..lol..

 

thats good to know, i'm gonna do a timing belt change on mine this month, hopefully, it will just be a days work!
